Contrary to popular belief, to be successful does not require that you have a high IQ. It is about living a certain kind of lifestyle daily with a vision of achieving something in particular and within a specific time frame. The vision is the driving force and you have to live out your life consistently in a manner that moves you nearer that goal.
Firstly, you have to decide what success is to you. For some people, living in a beautiful house is success. For others it could be a good corporate job with a five figure salary. So what is success to you? You need to define this clearly before you embark on your adventure. Many people fail because they concentrate on too many goals. They end up confused and give up. It is better to pick one at a time and put all your energy on it.
Once you have decided, you need to dedicate yourself wholeheartedly in working towards it by creating smaller goals on a daily basis. You need the big picture but you also need the smaller picture of what you need to do on a daily basis to attain that goal. So you need to write down the things that you need to do and get them done in a prioritised manner. You need to do it whether you like it or not. You also need to write your big goal. Add pictures if possible and stick it up where you can see it and remind yourself of your goal.
You need to do everything to the best of your ability whatever that task may be and how ever small it may be and whether you enjoy doing it or not because within every difficulty lies the seed for greater success. This applies even to people. The most difficult people around us test our stamina and teach us perseverance a trait required to be successful.
Secondly, you need to practise integrity to the highest degree. Only then you will gain the reputation of being trustworthy. You will be compelled to do everything right and make your life an open book with nothing to hide. If you do this, people will buy from you because they trust you. If you cannot be trusted nobody will buy from you.
Thirdly, visualise yourself as having achieved your goals. Practise visualisation every day because it gives you confidence. It also motivates you.
Lastly, be willing to engage a professional to help you achieve your goal. Alternatively, you could read books, listen to CDs, view DVDs or attend seminars/courses to bring you closer to your goals. You have to keep on learning continuously because nothing is static in this world. What was applicable ten years ago is outdated today, even with the Internet. Ten years from now there will be even more changes. There must be some kind of input.
However, learning is not easy because most adults have to juggle with working full time and having to care for their families. Hence, it is difficult for adults to go to an institution to learn new skills. Fortunately, we are lucky enough to have online education as well as tapes and CDs. So we should make full use of these. So having done all this you should become a successful person.
So how would you know that you have finally arrived?
Well, psychologists suggest that there are about seven pointers that can be used as a rough guide.
Firstly, you should have peace of mind.
Secondly, you should be healthy because it would show in most cases, if not all, that you are a disciplined person and to be successful you need to be disciplined.
Thirdly, you should have good relationships. This shows that you have a positive personality.
Fourthly, you should have financial freedom. You should not have to worry about money.
Fifthly, you should have worthy goals to live a purposeful life for the future regardless of your age.
Sixthly, you should be able to accept yourself the way you look, the way you sound, your background and ancestry. This is important for mental health.
Lastly, you should have the personal fulfilment that you are developing to your fullest potential and that your life is worth living.
If you have all these, congratulations! You have certainly arrived.
